An angler finds a submerged body in the waters off Wilhelmshaven. It turns out that the dead man was a former officer of the Dutch KFOR peacekeeping force in Kosovo. During his investigations, Chief Inspector Jan Holzer meets sailing instructor Michael Kühnert and his deaf wife Elena. He becomes fascinated by their use of sign language to communicate with one another and their daughter Sabin. Kühnert concedes that he was also a soldier in Kosovo and that that he met Elena there, but he claims not to know the dead man. Holzer is convinced the couple are hiding something.
