As relentless firebombing and blockade of war-ravaged Japan shows no sign of securing a surrender, the U.S. reluctantly prepares to invade. First, they need Okinawa, an island close to the mainland, as a base to stage their attack. The Marines fear the worst – but their amphibious invasion is met with almost total silence. Lulled into a false sense of security, it’s just the calm before the storm. In their desperation, the Japanese have been preparing a huge campaign of suicide attacks that they now unleash. The U.S fleet is savaged by ‘kamikaze’ pilots and on Okinawa Japanese troops fight to the death. America’s woe is compounded by the death of their inspirational President Roosevelt. The new man in charge, President Truman, has a different attitude to the civilian casualties and he’s made aware of a secret doomsday weapon.
