In 1923 the Weimar Republic is threatened with national bankruptcy. The ramifications of the Treaty of Versailles are noticeable. Berlin prints money to pay debts. Savings and pensions loose value. Demagogues like Adolf Hitler try to profit from the crisis. But Reich Chancellor Stresemann brings about the economic recovery with a new currency. He manages to communicate effectively with the victorious powers of World War 1 and is today seen as the saviour of the young democracy.
