The Indian Ocean is the most tropical of the oceans. Its warm waters produce a special diversity of species, its island world many indigenous cultures, which develop their own myths and ways of life influenced by the climate rhythms and live a particularly close relationship with the element of water. The Indian Ocean was also conquered by Europeans earlier than the other oceans. It is the sea of the Middle Ages because it harbors the spice islands with their black gold: pepper. On the maritime Silk Road of the “Islamic Sea”, local cultures mix with Arab and European influence and continue to shape the people to this day.
