When the U.S. Air Force develops a new ‘wonder’ bomber they want a base close to Japan to launch their raids. Marines are tasked with taking the enemies prized home island of Iwo Jima. U.S. Naval might pummels the island in preparation for an invasion, unaware the Japanese have withdrawn to a central mountain peak and a hidden tunnel network. More and more men are thrown at the battle, even though the new B29 bombers launching from the island are failing to make the promised an impact on Japan. Tokyo is vapourised but the Japanese military won’t surrender. As the death toll continues to mount in Iwo Jima, the American propaganda machine kicks into overdrive. A striking image of U.S. soldiers planting the stars and stripes on the island is promoted around the nation, along with the flag bearers, but three of them are already dead.
