Chasing the Undead - a History of Superstition

Supernatural creatures have fascinated people for millennia. For our ancestors, the fear of the undead was real. A closer look into the ground shows that: weighted down with stones, laced up, with bells in the grave or beheaded — the evidence is varied.

The documentary searches for traces of the “living dead” with the help of archaeologists. Even today, the superstition of living dead persists, and belief in the undead is also widespread in Great Britain. According to surveys, more people in Britain believe in ghosts than in God. With cultural anthropologist Deborah Hyde and neuroscientist Jason Braithwaite, we go on an exciting ghost hunt in Muncaster Castle and look for scientific explanations for the haunted phenomena there.
