The refugees hurry to find a place on the Gustloff. Finally, on 30 January 1945, the ship sets sail with over 10,000 people on board – completely overloaded and without sufficient protection. The men in command feel increasingly uneasy, and with Captain Kehding’s brother fearing an act of sabotage, Kehding orders his men to stop the ship.
