Fiete, who got infected on the boat, makes friends with outsider Herm Schwarting when Herm helps him cover up his theft of $5000 from the boat. The two of them take the money and head for the mainland to have some fun. At the same time, celebrated novelist Nikolai Wagner, on the island for a reading, is forced to cancel. He is suffering from deep depression from a major case of writer’s block, and also from drug withdrawal, since he can’t afford to buy any drugs. Evelin’s parents separate for good, and her father leaves for Berlin, upsetting her considerably. Her mother is not doing well either; she is completely overwhelmed by her four children and the demanding job of running a hotel. She runs into Magnus Fisker, her childhood sweetheart, at the grocery store. He is back on the island as part of a rehabilitation project with a group of juvenile offenders. Two seriously ill boys are flown by helicopter to the military hospital. The islanders are becoming increasingly worried.
