Amid the vast Pacific lies Hawaiʻi – born of fire, shaped by the sea. When the Mauna Loa erupted in 2022, new land and new life emerged where lava met the ocean. HAWAII – Islands of Fire and Life captures the fragile balance of this island world in stunning images by Lars Pfeiffer and Florian Graner. In the misty mountain rainforests, rare plants bloom, off Molokaʻi, cliffs rise over 1,000 meters from the sea. Beneath the surface, manta rays, sharks, and surgeonfish share a finely tuned network of mutual dependence. Yet even the most remote atolls feel the impact of humans. Scientists and activists fight for the islands with ancestral wisdom and modern science – guided by the principle of Aloha ʻāina: the land is family. And when the humpback whales begin their long journey back north, the circle of life and impermanence comes full circle.
