Wrocław is a 1,000-year-old city that has been home to various ethnicities and has belonged to six different states. Breslau/Wrocław was the scene of the largest population transfer within a European city when Germans left the city and Poles moved in between 1945 and 1947. Such illustrious figures as St. Hedwig, poets Angelius Silesius and Martin Opitz, and Edith Stein left their marks in Wrocław.
