As four nuns begin their day, Bishop Rentschler is taking the momentous decision to sell the convent in the Eifel region where they live. The prioress gives her consent, but novitiate Ruth is appalled.

The Bittners, who run the village store, are horrified by the news. At the same time they are worried about former prioress Philippa, who suffers from senile dementia. When the Bishop receives a letter of protest about the planned sale, a mediator shows up to talk to the nuns. The mediator is psychologist Ulrike Purscheck. She holds a motivational seminar for the nuns, but her appeal to “let go of the old” falls on deaf ears. Only Sister Brionie shows any interest in the idea.
