Marie has erased all memories of her past. She wants nothing and no one to remind her of the great loss she suffered a few years ago. Yet she refuses to acknowledge that, in doing so, she is harming not only herself but also her son Thomas. Marie’s headstrong neighbour, Judge Wilbert, is thoroughly displeased with the situation. Compassion must have its limits; grief must come to an end. Yet Wilbert seems to be alone in holding this view. It is only when Thomas gets into serious trouble and risks losing not only his scholarship but also his freedom that Marie begins to come to her senses.
