Lawyer Joachim Vernau is visited by a young American woman looking for her biological father after the death of her stepfather. She has travelled from New York to Berlin to establish what happened during a summer in the early 1990s at Boston University, the summer Vernau himself was studying there. Then a murder takes place and the young woman disappears. Vernau follows the trail to New York and to his old university in Boston.
