Uncle Quenttn has a meeting with top scientists Professor Terry-Kane and Mr Pottersham. That night Julian sees four men driving off - one at least appears to go reluctantly. As he leans out of the window to see more, he falls and breaks his leg.

Pottersham and Terry-Ksne have disappeared and Julian is convinced they have been kidnapped. While he stays at home with his leg in plaster, the others decide to camp at Faynight, the place written on a piece of paper by one of the men.
