Bavaria, 1965. Perhaps no decade has revolutionized German society as much as the 1960s. The political climate was dominated by the Cold War, the cultural climate by the Beatles. The town of Lehrbach seems immune to all change until Julia Welling arrives to set up a children's home on behalf of the Catholic Church. Her modern pedagogical methods and emancipated style clash with the traditional family image prevalent in the country. Julia defies her orders and buys an empty barrack from the U.S. troops to house her children's refuge, thereby finding the unexpected support of  U.S. Major David Carter. He is in charge of negotiating the closure of the garrison and is fascinated by Julia's self-confidence. But the feelings they have for one another are soon overshadowed by Julia's doubts; for as a soldier, David represents everything she rejects.
