Ku’damm 77 To Have World Premiere at MIPCOM CANNES

Latest Chapter in Era Spanning Series to Bow on Tuesday Night at Market

Paris and Mainz – 20 August 2025

MIPCOM CANNES and ZDF Studios today announced that the world premiere of Ku’damm 77, the latest chapter of the critically acclaimed and globally successful era-spanning German family saga, will be staged at this year’s MIPCOM CANNES, the world’s largest market for television and streaming content (13-16 October 2025).

Created and written by the award-winning showrunner Annette Hess (“The Weissensee Saga”, “The German House”), and directed by Maurice Hübner (“Kitz”, “Family Braun”) , the UFA Fiction-produced historical drama depicts a family through different decades at the ‘Galant’ dance school on Kurfürstendamm, with this latest three-part installment picking up in the pulsating yet divided Berlin of the 1970’s.

Premiering on Tuesday 14 October at 18.00 in the Grand Auditorium of the Palais des Festivals, the screening is open to all delegates and will be followed by a q and a with the showrunner, director, producer and members of the cast.

Shot in Berlin, Ku’damm 77 follows the hugely successful Ku'damm 56, Ku'damm 59 and Ku'damm 63 series which have enjoyed ratings success both in Germany, and internationally in over 30 countries across Asia, Australia, Africa, the Americas and Europe as well as gaining an International Emmy nomination. Worldwide distribution is handled by ZDF Studios.

Dr. Markus Schäfer, President and CEO of ZDF Studios: “The selection of Ku'damm 77 for a World Premiere Screening in Cannes proves the importance of German drama series in this top-class international arena. ZDF Studios is proud of this appealing addition to its drama catalogue, and we are confident that this programme will enjoy the same success with worldwide audiences as previous 'Ku'damm' editions.”

“The Ku’damm collection has truly resonated around the world.” Said Lucy Smith, Director of MIPCOM CANNES and MIPJUNIOR. “Its authentic, universal, and compelling storytelling has struck a chord with audiences, and we are thrilled that the international television community will get the chance to catch the first look of its much anticipated 70’s era in Cannes."

Picking up the family story in 1977, the apartment above the dance school now accommodates three generations: sisters Monika (Sonja Gerhardt) and Helga (Maria Ehrich), their almost adult daughters Dorli (Carlotta Bähre) and Friederike (Marie Louise Albertine Becker), and their mother and grandmother Caterina (Claudia Michelsen). Only Eva (Emilia Schüle), the third sister, is still ‘abroad’ for a long time, as her stay in prison is described. Three generations, yet the same new and recurring problems and questions that turn everything upside down. It is a magnifying glass for generations and society, shedding light on themes such as emancipation, self-discovery, reorientation and all of that told and presented with deep emotion and love for the Schöllack Family.

The returning ensemble cast are joined by new members for the upcoming series including Carlotta Bähre, Marie Louise Albertine Becker, Massiamy Diaby, Florian Stetter and Aziz Dyab among others.

Ku'damm 77 is an UFA FICTION production on behalf of ZDF. The producers are Marc Lepetit, Nico Hofmann and Markus Brunnemann. The commissioning editors at ZDF are Heike Hempel, Bastian Wagner and Beate Bramstedt.

MIPCOM CANNES is the world’s biggest and most impactful television and streaming content market, attracting over 10 500 delegates from more than 100 countries last year and whose week-long programme helps define the TV industry year.

Ku'damm 77 Synopsis :
The women's life together is turbulent, with fierce arguments followed by passionate reconciliations. Monika focuses entirely on her daughter Dorli's dance career, but when Dorli can no longer cope with the pressure of being a professional dancer, the symbiosis between mother and daughter begins to crumble. Monika rediscovers her own love of music through street musician Sharif (Aziz Dyab), and her encounter with Friederike's teacher Robert Beck (Sabin Tambrea) also opens up a new chapter for her in terms of men.

Although her mother Caterina claims not to interfere anymore, she is the éminence grise of the family and dance school, even though Helga is officially in charge of the business. She has closed herself off from much of what is going on inside the family after Wolfgang (August Wittgenstein) left for the East, and seeks solace in alcohol and in the Dahlem dentist Hannes (Florian Stetter). Daughter Friederike (Marie Louise Albertine Becker) views the new love with scepticism and keeps a watchful eye on her mother.

When Eva (Emilia Schüle) is released from prison after 14 years, she finds it difficult to readjust to everyday life in the 1970s. But when she is able to help the family out of a dilemma, the balance of power shifts. The family events are accompanied by the young journalist Linda Müller (Massiamy Diaby), who is making a documentary for a television station about the traditional company ‘Galant’ – although she is also pursuing a very personal agenda.

Ku'damm 77 tells the true story behind the façade of the Galant dance school. There is dancing, singing, debate and laughter. The story covers themes such as old love, toxic relationships, grief, separation and self-determination. The very different Schöllack women fight for a sense of togetherness and solidarity. Lively, combative — and full of love.
