Extreme Fortresses: Buildings of the Impossible

  • Neu

In some of the most inhospitable locations - atop sheer cliffs forming natural, impenetrable walls - master builders defied the laws of physics to construct castles, cities, and places of worship.

Every challenge had to be overcome to build at such dizzying heights. In Bonifacio, Corsica, a 1.5‑km rampart rises above the Mediterranean, sealed by a formidable bastion perched 45 meters above the harbor, with walls up to 15 meters thick. In Les Baux-de-Provence, a seigneurial residence was built 245 meters high, with vast halls partly carved into the rock. In Rocamadour, seven chapels and a basilica cling to a 100‑meter cliff, stacked on artificial terraces. Three extraordinary feats of architecture pushing human ingenuity to its limits.
