Young New York publishing house employee Flora Stanza is aghast when she learns that her mother is suffering from a serious illness and needs full-time care after the death of Flora's father. Flora's main concern is how to finance this. She can't expect any help from her brother, who has a wife and children of his own. The only way out seems to be the "Stanza Auction Company," from which she inherited a number of shares. But her hopes are dashed when her business partner Charles Morgan informs her of the company's impending bankruptcy. Flora can only be paid off if the company becomes profitable again. Actively supported by Charles, with whom she starts falling in love, Flora puts her heart and soul into her work. In particular, she does all she can to get a contract from the heiress Daisy Shark, who wants to auction off her father's valuable collection. But Daisy makes it clear that the key to success is entirely in the hands of Charles Morgan. Flora is torn between her love for Charles and the need to save the auction house, on which her mother's future depends.
