Around midnight on August 6th, a report came in of a downed plane in the Knik Arm, about 25 miles of Anchorage. Searchers were unable to locate the plane that night, and although it was visible at low tide, it was quickly covered by water. The plane wasn’t recovered until the next day. An investigation began into what could have caused the plane to crash less than two miles from the Birchwood Airport. An on scene investigation and wreckage layout ruled out mechanical problems, however it’s possible that the plane faced carb icing or fuel exhaustion. An examination of the GPS data showed the pilot turn toward land instead of going straight in toward the airport, implying that the pilot knew he was in trouble. Unfortunately, without testimony from the pilot, it may be impossible to ever know for sure what caused the plane to crash.
