A young, wild ocean. Due to its elongated shape, nowhere else do the tides and storms have such a strong effect as here. With a tidal range of up to 8 meters, they shape the everyday lives of people in Canada just as they do on the European Atlantic coast. Here lies the “Atlantic Arc”, characterized by round houses, innovative shipbuilding and a mentality that braves the storm. At the same time, the Atlantic is something of a bridge between the continents: Brave seafarers crossed it hundreds of years ago - first the Vikings, later European trade travelers and explorers. But the Atlantic is also the sea over which the slave trade was conducted, the sea of pirates, revolutions and emigrants. And important for Europe: the home of the Gulf Stream, which determines the climate and provides Europe with moderate temperatures. For a long time, it was the central sea until the Pacific overtook it as the hub of globalized maritime trade.
