The strategies that wildlife use to reproduce are so varied that some of them don’t even involve sex. Sometimes starfish are simply broken into pieces, while aphids can be born from an unfertilized egg. There are animals that spend their whole lives with one mate, others that are only faithful to their partner some of the time, and still others that are already breaking up when they’ve just met. In general, the males have to compete for the females, who choose the strongest suitors, or the handsomest ones, or the ones with the biggest attributes, or – if they’re lucky – the ones that are the best parents.
We will see how mammals, reptiles birds, fishes, insects or arachinds and others mate and courtship and we will then see that not everything fits the clichés… Nonetheless, whether it’s obvious or not, it is true that any efficient procreation system is run by the ladies.
