Germany’s Magic Mountains is a two-part series exploring Germany’s mountain landscapes, from the high Alps to the Central Uplands. Though differing in character, these regions share a common challenge: climate change and human influence are forcing wildlife to adapt to rapidly shifting conditions.

In the Alps, we follow 3 species finely tuned to this extreme world: alpine ibex mastering sheer cliffs, marmots in a race against a short summer, and rock ptarmigan whose seasonal camouflage is increasingly out of sync with conditions.

Beyond the Alps, the Central Uplands reveal ancient forests and rocky highlands. Rutting red deer, peregrine falcons, returning lynx, and elusive wildcats all inhabit these landscapes.

Through intimate wildlife stories, Germany’s Magic Mountains reveals the fragile balance between resilience and vulnerability.
