A new hothouse period is looming, and is also changing our oceans profoundly. Scientists are investigating what the future of our seas might be like by reconstructing maritime living conditions of past hothouse periods. The documentary " Surviving Hothouse Earth - Oceans" accompanies them on their search for clues. The researchers encounter traces of these extreme climate phases on tropical coral islands, in sediment cores, and at fossil sites. Measurements carried out by underwater drones, experiments in test basins and laboratory analyses complete the picture – and it turns out that, as in the past, the development of the largest habitat on earth is being determined by a lack of oxygen, migration, species extinction and a rapidly rising sea level.
