Walaam - The Hidden World of a Russian Monastery

The Walaam archipelago, always a symbol of Russian monasticism, is located in the far north of Russia. Monks have lived in this secluded area for nearly 1,000 years. Very few television crews have been allowed to visit the monastery before and accompany its residents in their daily life between work, prayer and song. "Walaam" offers rare insights and shows the preparations for Easter, the biggest and most important festival for the Russian Orthodox Church. The highlight is the Easter Vigil, which the monks celebrate in a nearly six-hour ceremony by singing century-old spiritual songs.
