Part 2: Times of hope (1988–1989)

The GDR is collapsing, and the Socialist Unity Party expends every last bit of its energy on its attempts to suppress any opposition. Margot pushes ahead with arrests and the ensuing sale of additional members of the opposition. She prepares for the worst and starts to transfer money to Swiss bank accounts. In a daring maneuver, she has her foster son Roland deported out of prison to the West. Meanwhile, Lotte’s son is sentenced to four years in prison. Margot offers to get him out, but in return Lotte must denounce her fellow members of the environmental movement. Roland’s sister Christa finds out that Margot hid the truth about her mother from her, and turns to Lotte for answers.
