In April 1994 South Africa held its first democratic elections, bringing apartheid to an end. The African National Congress, or ANC, swept to victory and Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as the first President of the new South Africa. It was a wonder that the elections happened at all. Change was indeed a miracle, but it was a bloody one and it seems that every step towards the elections is to be sabotaged by an act of violence.
