Richard lives alone in a beautiful old house by the river. In his own sharp-witted, curmudgeonly way, he’s come to terms with the end of both his career as a successful writer and his days as a ladies’ man. He’s left with his vintage car, which he races recklessly through the Bavarian countryside, and his weekly fishing session with his only friend, Gabriel. Though his housekeeper, Martha, puts up with his moods, she always has a sarcastic retort at the ready.
One misty morning, a young woman and her son get into a car accident right outside of Richard’s house. While the car is in the shop, Richard invites Judith and Dominik to stay with him a few days. The few days turn into a long-term stay.
